South Sami Museum and Cultural Center
Saemien Sijte holds a very important position in the education and preservation of the South Sámi culture, identity, language, history, and community. The historic settlements of the South Sámi culture, with its elementary shapes, materials, and ways of construction, provided us with inspiration for this distinctive project. The aim was to achieve a cohesive facility with varied and articulated continuations of rooms, each with contact to the landscape, the cultural center’s outdoor area, or in-between the rooms themselves. The building’s architectural shape, plan, and materials bring the Sámi culture and the site’s characteristics together into a coherent unit.
